More information on this year's speakers:

Jim Knox - Curator of Education at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo | COMMUNICATION
Expert educator, communicator, and conservationist, Jim Knox has worked extensively to equip the next generation of environmentalists with the skills and inspiration to continue with conservation careers. Through education conservation initiatives, and thousands of presentations, Jim Knox works to provide inspiration to others through his expansive knowledge of wildlife and conservation.

Dr. Anil Raj Kizha - School of Forest Resources at University of Maine | FORESTRY
Professor Anil Kizha’s research interests and forestry passions revolve around sustainable timber harvesting which involve investigating environmental-cost analysis. His work analyzes how different types of harvesting methods influence energy efficiency, geospatial applications in forest applications, and urban planning.

Dr. Erika Zavaleta - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Santa Cruz, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor | BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY
Dr. Erika Zavaleta’s work bridges ecology, conservation, and inclusion. Her lab, the Conservation Science & Solutions Lab, investigates how ecosystems respond to climate change factors, drivers of changing biological diversity, and efficient conservation practices. Her lab combines economics, public policy, and anthropology alongside ecosystem and organism-based conservation studies.

Dr. Aaron Sandel - Department of Anthropology at University of Texas at Austin | BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY
Professor Aaron Sandel is a primatologist studying wild chimpanzees at Ngogo in Kibale National Park. His research interests revolve around chimpanzee social hierarchy, primate cognition, and the physiology of male chimpanzee’s transition to adolescence.

Dr. Abdullahi Ali - Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) Fellow and Founder of Hirola Conservation | BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY
Abdullahi Ali holds a P.h.D. from the University of Wyoming, where his dissertation studied the conservation and ecology of the hirola antelope in the Ijara District in eastern Kenya. He uses his connection to the area to address cultural conflicts and engage the local community in hirola conservation.

Ayushi Jain - National Geographic Photo Ark EDGE Fellow | COMMUNICATION
Ayushi’s research interests focus around the endangered Cantor’s giant softshell turtle found in three South Indian states. She is working to create an ecological conservation plan to save this precious endangered species.

Dr. Shalini Dhyani - Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment Division at the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEEM). | BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY
Dr. Shalini Dhyani serves as the South Asia Regional Chair for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Commission on Ecosystems Management (CEM). Her work centers an ecosystem based approach for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Dr. Elliot Scanes - School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney | BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY
Dr. Elliot Scanes’ research interests surround the effects of climate change and ocean acidification on organisms residing in marine environments.

Melissa Cronin - P.h.D. candidate in the Conservation Action Lab at UC Santa Cruz | BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY
Melissa Cronin’s research focuses on conservation strategies for marine megafauna. Her work investigates manta and devil rays as models for marine fishery bycatch.

Abe Borker - Program Director of the USCS Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program and P.h.D. student in the Conservation Action Lab. | EDUCATION
Abe Borker’s research interests lie within the conservation of ecosystems and wildlife populations through the use of bioacoustics. He uses a monitor-based approach to refine and measure outcomes which can be used with more efficiency in a conservation approach. He is also passionate about creating experiences of discovery, identity, and communication for young environmentalists in conservation.

Anita Palmer - National Geographic Education Fellow, Co-Founder of GISetc and President of Geoporter | ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Anita Palmer is committed to making education of geospatial technology accessible to both students and educators alike. Her work centers geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing, image analysis, drones, and location-based technologies.

Dr. Gladys Kalema- Zikusoka - Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH). | PUBLIC HEALTH
Dr. Gladys’ work is based on the foundational concept of coexistence. Through her work with the CTPH, Dr. Gladys promotes environmental health alongside community health, empowering people to preserve the delicate ecosystems they depend on.

Asher Jay - National Geographic Explorer and Entrepreneur | ACTIVISM

Our History

Careers in Conservation has typically gathered environmental enthusiasts from the Boston-Cambridge area for a day of workshopping and networking with panelists and speakers whose passions for the environment have become their careers. Albeit in a virtual format, we are excited to meet and speak with conservationists working around the clock to ensure biodiversity and community health are preserved for generations to come.
